Spiritual Significance
The offering of Gaja Vastra holds deep symbolic and spiritual significance in Hindu worship:
- Honoring Divinity: Offering new and beautiful clothing to the idol (alankaram) is one of the 16 steps of traditional worship (Shodashopachara Pooja). The Gaja Vastra signifies treating the deity as a royal guest and supreme sovereign.
- Symbol of Prosperity and Wealth: The elephant (Gaja) is traditionally associated with royalty, strength, abundance, and the Goddess Lakshmi (as seen in Gaja Lakshmi iconography). By offering a Gaja Vastra, the devotee seeks blessings for wealth, fortune, and material prosperity.
- Austerity and Devotion: Offering cloth, especially rich fabric, is seen as an act of pure devotion and a sacrifice of one’s material possessions to the Divine.
- Completeness of Worship: The cloth represents the covering of the universe. Adorning the deity with Vastra ensures that the worship is complete and holistic.
